QRU? Junior Melendez

By: Michae Baylor, online writer

Junior Melendez is a quiet student. Nobody knows his real talent. He can speak almost eight languages fluently.  After practicing all summer, Junior is going to try to find a job as a translator.

How many languages do you speak and can you name them?

I speak eight languages: Spanish, English, Italian, Chinese, German, French, Japanese, and Russian.

What inspired you to learn these languages?

My friends inspired me. I had people from all over the world around me and socializing with me, so I was inspired to learn them.

How did you learn these languages?

I learned the languages by YouTube and Dictionaries. Sometimes, I would even force my friends to teach them to me or help me learn them. It felt like I was studying for a language SOL.

Did learning these languages waste a lot of your time?

Yes, it wasted tons of my time but it was worth it. I think languages are so interesting. Sometimes I would even stay up till one in the morning reading, trying to put vocabulary together and trying to understand.

Why did you want to learn the languages?

I wanted to be able to communicate with everybody, not just in the English language, because my friends are from everywhere you can imagine. Sometimes they would speak in different languages, and it was annoying to me because I had no idea what they were saying.

Which language is your favorite and why?

German, they are my favorite people. I find their history really interesting. I have a lot of German friends, and they are the nicest people ever. I love communicating with them in German.
